The city was first heard of in circa 300 BC. Its long history is the story of many different conquerers, of large jewish populations (mostly exterminated by the Nazis in WW II), of its strategic location as a major seaport serving the hinterland of southeastern Europe, and of culture and learning (two universities now). It’s name comes from that of the half sister of Alexander the Great. She was born on the day of one of his great victories which was made possible by the help of Thessalian horesmen. Hence Thessalian plus Nike (Goddess of Victory). Cool!
