Dion originally was regarded as the sacred place of Zeus and The Muses. In the 5th century it was also a place for an annual Macedonian festival that included games and theatrical events. The city had both public and private buildings, an agora, baths, workshops and basilicas. In later times the emphasis changed to Christian concerns. The city fell into ruins through earthquakes and general neglect.
