The digs are the unearthing of a fortified city (85km from Thessaloniki) thought to have existed from the 6th century BC to the 5th century AD. Located at the foot of Mount Olympus it was guaranteed a constant water supply so became a military training ground as well as a religious center. Alexander The Great trained his army here before heading east to conquer Asia. The Museum, nearby shows the influence of both Macedonian & Roman occupancy.
