Dondon, Dondoni, Dondone, I’m confused as to which is which. The site we visited was a very ancient sanctuary for the oracle Dondona. The oldest of the Greek oracles(according to 5th century historian Herodotus), Dondona was devoted to the Greek god, Zeus, and to the Mother Goddess, Gaia. Priests of the oracle gathered under the sacred Oak Tree and listened to the sound of the leaves as they shivered in the breeze interpreting the sounds to help predict what actions should be taken. People from all over the known world at that time travelled to the oracle. The most interesting part of the site is the amphitheatre while other buildings are now only foundation outlines and rubble.
