Meteora is both a fascinating place in its rock formations and in the monastaries that perch on top of them. The name, Meteora, is Greek for “suspended in the air”, or “in the heavens above” referring to the precariously located buildings which seem impossibly set on top. The site is thought to have existed from the 11th century. There are only 6 of these establishments left, five inhabited by men, one by women. They are built on sandstone pillars located at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly in central Greece. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site
