Where Zeus was worshipped, where the Olympic games were held and the torches for modern Olympic Games are lit. You may remember the terrible fires Greece suffered last summer. Much of the shrubbery shown in these pictures was burned out.

The site is thought to predate worship of Zeus and has a beginning as early as 1900 BC. Greeks once thought that the Olympic games began in prehistoric times but we know that the first Olympiad was held in 776 BC. Men participated in the games naked (women were not allowed to watch the races) and the winner’s prize was a simple crown of olive leaves, a moral victory and the praise of his fellow men.
