Bulla Regia- The Place of Royalty. developed during Hadrian’s time.. Noted for its exceptional undergound house remains- homes of rich Romans. The houses were two-tiered with the underground portion of the same design as that above ground.The upper story for winter living, the lower level for summer living. The site was destroyed by an earthquake. Excavations began in 1906. Due to generous rainfall the land was excellent for grain growing.It was the granary of the Roman Empire with wheat and barley as the main crops. Dougga, regarded as the best preserved of any North African Roman ruins was established originally about the 6th century BC. It came to be controlled by the Phoenicians, held for a time by the Numidians and finally by the Romans. The Numidians called it TBGG.
